What is Art
There are two people who become intimately involved in a work of art, just like a child, the creator and the viewer. The more the artist defines the vision, the less for the viewer to discover and add. I believe visual art, like music, poetry, etc. is a form of entertainment. In other words, every time you see a painting that, to you, is special, like a favorite song it will transport you to a happier place.
I believe a question that needs to be asked of much of today's "art" is: Does it reach out and touch you, adding to your home and bringing a bit of happiness into your life, or does it only momentarily startle you and possibly confuse you because it is exhibited in a modern “art” gallery or museum. While I believe all good/great art will catch your attention and draw you closer, it should allow you to see more in it and keep your interest in the coming years and as you change you may what you see in the art will change in subtle ways. Michaelangelo's Pieta and Picasso’s Guernica, the Impressionists all share these common virtuals. When you first walk into a room at a gallery or museum, there are always one or two paintings the catch you eye and draw you in, Some may on the surface seem simple, some much more complex, and some may even confuse you, but they always draw you back time and time again. Witness the 2003 covering of Picasso’s anti World War II master piece, Guernica, at the UN prior to our country making its case to go to war. And in comparison, Michaelagnelo’s Pieta, which brings so many to tears with it’s beauty and profound statement. I might question whether DuChamps "Fountain" is art or just a bold and controversial statement to the existing solidified establishment about what they considered to be art. But then historically that probably makes it art, but once the statement was made, what are all the imitators creating. Self Indulgence? And with the Pieta’ and Guernica still profoundly moving us 100’s of years later, does the “Fountain” stand with them or does it stand only as an important “Period” statement. I am often asked what is art? I firmly believe, if it touches you, it is art. Your favorite song makes you feel better and so should your favorite painting.
